Comparing cash envelopes to my debit card for 3 months, the winner surprised me

Back in October I started using cash envelopes for groceries and eating out, thinking it would force me to slow down. After three months I compared it to my usual debit card spending from the summer and the difference was huge, about $140 less per month just on groceries. The trick was that handing over actual bills made me hesitate, while tapping my card felt like nothing. I still use the card for bills and gas, but for variable stuff the envelope system in my tiny apartment in Austin just works better. Has anyone else found that the method matters more than the amount you set aside?
