Found out my grocery delivery app has been charging me an extra $2.50 per order for months

I was going through my bank statements last week for my monthly budget check in Ohio and noticed a recurring charge from the app that didn't match what I thought I was paying. Turns out the default tip was set to 18% on every order without me realizing it, and I had been paying $2.50 extra each time for like 8 months straight. That's around $120 I could have saved if I just looked closer at the breakdown. Has anyone else caught their delivery apps sneaking in extra fees like this?

Wow, I actually see this a little differently than most people probably do. That 18% default tip isn't really sneaky, it's printed right there in the order summary before you hit confirm. I mean yeah it sucks to find $120 gone, but tipping your driver 18% is pretty standard for delivery services these days, it's not like they hid it in the fine print somewhere. If anything, I think the app is just trying to make sure drivers actually get paid something decent since a lot of people would tip zero if they had to manually type it in every time. Just my two cents, but maybe the real lesson is to always double check those breakdowns before you click order.

I double check my receipts so hard I actually found a $5 overcharge at the grocery store once, so I guess I'm just built for this.

Hey hold on, so you're saying it's printed right there in the order summary? I get that, but isn't the whole point of a default setting that most people just trust it and don't change it? I mean if the app really wanted to be fair about tipping, why not make the default a flat dollar amount that's more obvious, or even better, pop up a quick confirmation box that says "Hey, just so you know, you're tipping 18% on this order"? That way it's not just buried in the fine print but actually in your face where you can't miss it. And I don't buy the argument that it's just making sure drivers get paid, because if the app really cared about that, they'd pay their drivers a fair wage instead of passing that cost onto customers through sneaky default tips.
