My friend called me out for buying overpriced coffee pods - now I do pour over

My buddy Dave saw my Keurig setup and said I was basically burning $40 a month on those plastic pods. I switched to a cheap Melitta pour over cone and a $12 bag of beans from the local roaster downtown. Now I spend about $8 a month on coffee and the waste is almost zero. Anyone else have a friend who gave them a hard truth that actually saved money?

Dave called me out for the same thing last year... he actually did the math on my K-Cup habit and it came to almost $600 a year. That hurt to hear but he was totally right. I switched to a French press and those $12 bags from the local roaster too, now I'm down to maybe $10 a month tops. The crazy part is my coffee tastes way better now than it ever did out of those plastic pods. It's nice having a friend who actually cares enough to tell you the hard truth instead of just letting you waste money.

Totally agree with you on the taste thing, that's the biggest shocker for most people who switch. One thing I'd add is to buy a cheap burr grinder, even just a manual one for $20. Pre-ground coffee goes stale way faster than whole beans, so grinding right before you brew makes that French press taste even better. You'll save even more in the long run too since whole beans last longer.
