My neighbor showed me her envelope system and it changed my grocery spending

I was chatting with my neighbor, Linda, in our building's laundry room last month about how my food budget kept going over. She pulled out a little accordion folder with labeled envelopes for things like 'groceries', 'gas', and 'fun money'. She said she puts $400 cash in the grocery envelope on the 1st, and when it's gone, she's done for the month. I tried it this month and only spent $380! I was so used to just swiping my card without thinking. Has anyone else tried a cash-only system for a specific category? Did it work for you?

Linda's laundry room envelope system actually saved you twenty bucks this month.

Right? That envelope system is a game changer, @ericj45. I found an extra thirty bucks in my coat pocket one thanks to it.

Finding thirty bucks is nice, but calling it a life changing system feels like a stretch. It's just putting cash in envelopes. My grandma did that for fifty years and never called it a hack. It helps you see where money goes, sure, but it's not some magic fix. You still have to not spend the money, which is the hard part no envelope does for you.
