Pro tip: I started tracking every single dollar spent for 30 days, even the $3 coffee.
I was always $200 short at the end of the month and couldn't figure out why, so I wrote down every single purchase in a notebook. Turns out I was spending about $80 a month just on small snacks and drinks from gas stations. Has anyone else done a spending log and found a surprise leak like that?

Try doing it for a full 90 days instead of 30. I mean, a month can miss some bigger bills that only come every other month. It really shows you the full picture of where your money goes.

Yeah, matthew166 is totally right. I tracked for a full quarter once and it was a shock. You catch those once-a-year things like car registration or a big insurance payment that throws a normal month way off. It forces you to actually save for those irregular costs instead of being surprised. Doing it for three months shows your real spending habits, not just a lucky or tight month. That longer view is what finally got my budget to actually work.

Spot the same thing with habits like working out or eating healthy. A short streak feels good but seeing the real pattern takes way longer lol.
