PSA: The $5 cash envelope method beat my fancy budgeting app
I used a popular app for a year, but it felt like guesswork. Last month, I tried the old school cash envelope system for groceries only. I put $300 cash in an envelope and when it was gone, I stopped spending. I saved $75 compared to my usual app-tracked spending. Has anyone else switched back to a physical system and had it work better?

Forget cash, apps track everything automatically.

Totally get this. The envelope thing makes the money feel real in a way an app just can't. I use it for my fun money and eating out budget. Seeing the cash get low in that envelope stops me from ordering delivery way faster than a number on a screen. It's like a physical warning sign your brain can't ignore. Apps make it too easy to just tap and spend without feeling it.

My grandma always kept her grocery money in a cookie tin on the fridge. Watching her count out those bills before the store made me understand what a budget really was. I still picture that tin when I swipe my card.
