The clearance cart at my local grocery store in Cleveland changed how I batch cook
I used to walk right past the clearance cart at the Save A Lot near my place in Cleveland because I assumed it was all dented cans and sad produce. Last week I stopped because a guy was loading up on 4 packs of chicken thighs marked down to $2.99 each, and he told me he cooks them all Sunday and freezes them in portions. I tried it myself with 6 packs and spent $18 on protein for almost 3 weeks of lunches, which is way less than the $45 I was spending on deli meat. The trick is checking the sell by date and cooking or freezing everything within 2 days, which I did with a big sheet pan and some cheap spices. My grocery bill dropped from about $140 a week to $112, and I'm not even meal planning that hard. Now I swing by the cart every Tuesday and Thursday since that seems to be when they restock it. Does anyone else have a specific day or time when the markdowns hit at their store?
