The envelope system felt like a scam until I actually tried it last month

I figured cash in labeled envelopes was some boomer relic that wouldn't work with my debit card habit. But after my Seattle rent went up $150, I gave it a shot for groceries and eating out. I put $260 in the food envelope on the 1st and it ran out by the 21st, which showed me exactly where my money was going. Now I'm not saying it's perfect, but it did stop my random $9 coffee runs cold. Has anyone else found that physically handing over cash makes you hesitate more than tapping a card?

The sticker shock of watching that envelope go empty by the 21st is what finally got me to meal plan for real. I used to swipe my card and just ignore the total until the statement came, but cash makes you do the math in your head before you even grab the bread. I started making a big pot of chili on Sundays and suddenly had enough left over for a Friday pizza. The weird part is I didn't cut out any fun stuff, I just stopped buying snacks at the gas station on a whim. Tapping a card feels fake, like I'm playing with points, but handing over a twenty feels like losing a tiny piece of my week.
