The guy at the San Antonio HEB checkout talked me into a $4.50 rotisserie chicken and my grocery budget has never been the same
So I'm standing in the checkout line at the HEB on Military Drive in San Antonio about three weeks ago, and I've got my usual cart of rice, beans, eggs, and a couple packs of chicken thighs because I try to keep my grocery bill under $60 a week. The older guy bagging my stuff looks at my thighs and goes, 'You know those are $7.99 a pound right now, and the rotisserie bird by the door is four fifty for two pounds of meat.' I kind of laughed it off at first because I figured the rotisserie chicken was mostly bones and salt. He walked me over to the case himself, held one up, and said his wife pulls all the meat off and gets four meals out of one, then boils the bones for soup. I bought one just to get him to stop, took it home, and honest to god got three dinners and a pot of stock out of it. That $4.50 chicken cut my weekly meat spend by almost $20, and I've bought one every Sunday since. Now I'm wondering if I've been sleeping on the deli case this whole time. Does anybody else lean on the rotisserie chicken trick, and do your stores still do them cheap or did the price creep back up?
