The night my $4 spreadsheet finally clicked
I used to track every purchase in my head and then wonder why I was broke by the 20th. Took me until last month, sitting on my porch in Akron, to realize my whole system was backwards. I was budgeting for what I hoped to spend instead of what I actually spent, so I kept failing the same week. That Tuesday I wrote down every coffee, every gas fill up, even the $2.50 parking meter, and the surprise was real. Turns out my 'small stuff' was eating $180 a month without me noticing once. Now I just do a quick tally every Sunday night and my numbers finally match real life. Anyone else have a moment where the obvious took way too long to hit them?

$180 a month on small stuff? That's wild, man. @xenaf51 you saying you spent $90 a week on sandwiches and energy drinks is even crazier, my jaw dropped reading that. Guess the little stuff really does add up before you know it.

Turns out I was the exact opposite. I tracked everything down to the penny for years and still felt broke, so I figured the whole thing was a scam. Then I stopped tracking for a month and realized I was spending $90 a week on deli sandwiches and energy drinks, which I never would have caught because I always rounded down. The Sunday tally thing is the only part that works for me too, once a week is enough to see the pattern without turning it into a second job.
