Took a pay cut for a remote role and still came out ahead

I was nervous about accepting a remote job that paid less than my old office job. But I sat down and added up all my work costs. Turns out, I was spending a lot on gas, eating out, and office clothes. Now, even with the lower salary, I save more money each month. It's been a huge win for my budget and my peace of mind.

I remember when gas hit over four bucks a gallon last year, that really hurt the wallet. But are you sure the math adds up over time? Remote work might have its own costs, like higher electricity bills or needing a better home setup. Plus, missing out on office perks or networking could hurt your career later. Have you thought about those hidden expenses?

Honestly my electric bill went up maybe twenty bucks a month, max. Compare that to sixty bucks a week just for gas and tolls before lunch costs. The home setup thing is real, but I bought a decent chair and monitor used. As for networking, I've gotten more actual help from online communities than I ever did from forced office small talk lol.

Question whether those office perks actually help careers or just feel nice. Have you ever gotten a real promotion from coffee machine talk, or does it mostly just eat up time you could use for actual work? I mean sure, free snacks are cool, but do they pay your bills or just make you stay later? What if the real hidden cost is trading your personal time for stuff that looks good but doesn't really move you forward?
