Took me 9 weeks to realize my envelope system was the problem, not me

I kept blowing my grocery budget every single week and blamed my own discipline, but it turned out my envelopes were all getting mixed up because I forgot to sort them by store. Switched to separate cash apps for each category in Nashville and finally hit my $450 monthly food target for 3 straight weeks. Anyone else ever find out the tool itself was the leak?

Ugh, that's so frustrating! But honestly, good for you for figuring it out. I had a similar thing with my budget app, it kept double counting my coffee runs. Switched to a simple notebook and suddenly it all made sense. Sometimes the system really is the problem, not us!

Wait, did the notebook actually fix it or did you just stop looking at the numbers as closely? I mean, I tried that once with a planner and I was so bad at writing things down that I'd just guess at the end of the week. The app at least forced me to look at my spending, even if it was wrong sometimes. Maybe I'm just too lazy for the notebook method, but I'm curious if you found yourself being more honest with yourself on paper than with an app? idk, I feel like I'd just round down my coffee runs to make myself feel better.

Real talk, the notebook didn't magically fix the numbers, it forced me to confront the act of writing them down. There's something about physically scribbling $6.75 for a coffee that makes your brain stop and go "wait, that's a lot." Apps just let you swipe and forget, so paper almost makes you want to be accurate just to avoid feeling dumb.
