Warning: I bought a $40 'budgeting app subscription' that just turned out to be a fancy spreadsheet.
I figured it out after three months of paying for it, which is $120 I could have saved by just using a free template.

That subscription model is a common trick. I saw one app that was just a wrapper for a free Google Sheets template, charging $8 a month. It's smart to check if the core tool is something you can get for free before you commit.
