Warning: that warehouse club membership add-on hit my auto-renew without a single email

I popped into the big box store near Tulsa last month just to grab dog food, and while checking out they pushed me to add their premium membership for an extra $60 a year, supposedly for cash back and cheaper gas. I said sure because I was tired and the line was long, but I never got a receipt printed with the terms, just a verbal total. Within three weeks, the $60 charge hit my card, and when I called to cancel they told me it was auto-renew and I had to jump through a return process at the physical store. Turns out the cashier never even swiped my card for the upgrade, they used a saved card on file from my yearly renewal. I went back and stood in the member services line for 40 minutes, and finally got a refund, but only after showing my bank statement. That same store has done this to at least three other folks in my neighborhood, so check your card statements this month if you've been near any membership counter. Has anyone else gotten blindsided by these add-on upsells, or did I just get the one lazy cashier who skipped the fine print?

Wow, I actually love their premium membership and have saved way more than $60 on gas alone!

Buddy of mine signed up for the gas perk last year and laughed about it at first. He drives a lot for his side gig, so the discount actually added up to like $80 in one month alone. The real kicker was when he used the app at a random station in the middle of nowhere and it worked without a hitch. He still grumbles about the yearly fee but never lets it lapse.
