Wasted $300 on a fancy budget app before I figured out my own system
I spent six months using YNAB because everyone swore by it. Dropped $300 on the subscription and maybe $50 more on little add-ons and templates. Turns out I just needed a simple Google Sheets setup with three columns: income, fixed bills, and spending money. The app made me overthink every dollar and I quit tracking altogether after two months. Anyone else pay for tools that made your budgeting worse instead of better?

I actually had the opposite experience with YNAB. I used it for 3 years and it saved me from overdraft fees like 4 times in the first six months alone. The $300 was worth it for me because I needed that constant reminder to check my categories before spending. Google sheets just felt too passive and I'd forget about my grocery budget until I was already $50 over. Different brains need different systems I guess.

Ha, I get why it worked for you but man $300 a year just to avoid forgetting about groceries? That feels like a lot of money for a reminder system. I've been using a simple envelope method with cash for years and I've never overdrafted once. It's not that serious for most people, you can just set a weekly phone alarm to check your bank balance. @rubyshah I'm glad it saved you though, but I think a lot of folks overcomplicate budgeting when a notebook and pen would do the same thing.
