Sketching trails in my bullet journal kept me on track during a solo hike
I went on a solo hike a while back and got turned around a couple times. My bullet journal had a page where I drew the main path and landmarks. This little sketch became my guide when my phone died. I added notes on where I saw wildlife and good rest spots. It's now my go-to method for any outdoor adventure.

Love that idea. Such a smart, low-tech backup. I always worry about my phone dying out there.

Honestly that seems like extra junk to carry around... modern phones last forever if you just turn off the flash and close the apps.

Nancy's never been caught in a real downpour with a dead battery, clearly. My phone's GPS crapped out on a foggy trail last fall. Had to use a paper map from the ranger station like some kind of pioneer. Low-tech backups aren't junk, they're the difference between being fine and being on the local news.
