Shoutout to the landlord in Toledo who raised my rent 40% and accidentally fixed my business
Two years ago my rent for a tiny 400 square foot office in Toledo jumped from $800 to $1,120 and I almost shut the whole thing down. I sat in my car in the parking lot after signing that new lease and did the math on my phone, and it came out to needing 3 more sales a month just to break even. So I called my 12 best customers instead of my 2 worst ones and asked them straight up what else they'd pay me for. Eight of them said they wanted the same service but faster, so I dropped my turnaround from 5 days to 2 and raised prices 15% that same week. Lost 3 small accounts, made up for it in 6 weeks, and now I do less work for more money. It was the rent hike that forced the switch, not some book or podcast. Anyone else get pushed into a price change by a cost you couldn't control?
How do you know the rent hike is what did it, and not just the fact that you finally sat down and did the math? Plenty of people get hit with a cost jump and just eat it or close up shop, so the push came from inside your own head, not from the landlord. The raise was just a deadline.
