Update: I blew $2,000 on a fancy business coach who just gave me generic advice
Back when I started my consulting gig, I was desperate for a fast track and hired this coach who promised to double my clients. All I got were recycled tips like 'network more' and 'build your brand' that I could have read online for free. It stung, especially since I was barely making rent at the time. Anyone have a good way to spot a real mentor from a talker?

My first mentor charged me five hundred bucks for a single meeting. The best ones will give you clear steps for your exact situation, not just general ideas. Ask them to describe a past client's problem and their specific fix. If they can't get into the weeds, they're probably just repackaging free stuff. How did you find this coach in the first place?

Elizabeths51 makes a good point about asking for past client fixes. I read a blog post once where a guy said he always asks potential mentors to walk him through a real case study from start to finish, including where the client struggled. If they get vague, it's a red flag. That weeds out the ones just selling common advice you could find online.

Totally! It's like @elizabeths51 said... you see this everywhere now, people selling basic info as some big secret fix.
