Walked into a competitor's shop in Mesa and saw 40 years of growth sitting in one corner
I was in Mesa on a service call and stopped at a supply house I had never used before. While I waited, I watched a guy run the counter who clearly owned the place, and he was training a kid half his age on how to pack orders. The owner told me he had 6 trucks back in 2003 and now runs 19, and he still shows up at 6am. What really got me was a whiteboard behind the register with customer names and follow up dates on it, all handwritten. He said they call every commercial account every 90 days whether they need anything or not, and that habit is why his retention is over 80 percent. Then he pointed at the kid and said that kid would run the counter by next spring. I walked out thinking about how I have been chasing new leads for my own shop and never once built a follow up list like that. Anybody here doing scheduled check ins with old clients instead of just waiting for the phone to ring?
