Changed my mind about using boilerplate contracts after a $3,200 mistake

I used to think those generic contract templates from LegalZoom were fine for my small handyman business in Austin. Then a client claimed I didn't finish a job and refused to pay $3,200. My generic contract had no scope of work or milestone terms, so I had zero legal backing. Now I pay a local lawyer $150 per custom contract and it's saved me way more than that already. Anyone else had a cheap template backfire on them?

I had a buddy in San Antonio who used a boilerplate lease agreement for his rental property. Tenant stopped paying rent after three months. Contract didn't specify late fees or eviction procedures. Cost him $4,500 in lost rent plus lawyer fees to sort it out. The cheap templates just don't account for Texas specific laws. Worth every penny to have a local attorney write it.

Did you try to renegotiate the contract at all before calling a lawyer?

And that buddy in San Antonio is totally right about the Texas specific stuff. My lawyer mentioned there are a bunch of local laws about home improvement contracts here, like required cancellation periods, that a generic template from out of state would never cover. Have you looked into that for your own situation?
