DIY LLC vs LegalZoom - wasted $800 learning the hard way

Set up my first LLC through LegalZoom back in 2019. Paid $800 total. Got documents but zero actual guidance. Last month my buddy did his own filing in Wyoming for $100. Same result. Same protection. LegalZoom just preys on people scared of paperwork. Anybody else get bent over by these online legal middlemen?

Ugh, I feel your pain... I went with one of those services too back in 2020 and it was a total ripoff. Paid $650 for their fancy package and all I got was a bunch of generic forms I could have filled out myself in an hour. My buddy did his own filing for $150 and it turned out exactly the same. It's crazy how they make you think you need their help when it's really just a simple form and a check.

Paid $600 to legally change my name and spell it wrong on the form, that's on me though.

Correct me if I'm wrong @annaw73, but I think you might be mixing up the filing fee with the service fee. The actual court filing is usually just a couple hundred bucks, the rest is what you paid for someone to fill in the blanks for you.
