Found out my lease renewal clause was locking me into auto-renewals for 3 years
So I run a small coffee cart in Denver and rented a storage unit for my gear. Signed the lease 2 years ago, never read the fine print about renewal. Last month I tried to give notice to move to a bigger spot and the landlord hit me with the auto-renewal clause. Apparently signing that initial lease meant I agreed to a 3 year rolling term every time it renewed. I only found out because another tenant in my building warned me when she saw me about to sign the renewal form. Cost me an extra 2 months of rent ($480) to break out early. Checked my contract and yeah, there it was in tiny print on page 4. Anyone else get burned by auto-renewal terms in commercial leases? What did you do to fix it without paying the penalty?
