Just realized the lease my landlord handed me in Columbus last week has a clause letting him keep my security deposit for "normal wear"
I signed a 12 month lease for a small storefront and only caught it after I read the whole thing twice. He wants $1,800 up front and the clause says he can decide what counts as wear. Has anyone pushed back on language like this or am I stuck hiring a lawyer over it?
Seen this exact thing in a lease for a spot near Grandview and I used to just sign whatever they put in front of me. What changed my mind was watching a friend lose $1,500 because the landlord said a scuffed floor was "wear" and kept the whole thing. That word "normal wear" is doing all the work there, since he gets to define it after you move out, so ask him to list what he actually counts as wear in writing. If he won't put it in the lease, that tells you plenty before you hand over $1,800.
