Partnership handshake deal cost me big, now I always get it in writing
Back in 2021 I started a small landscaping business with a buddy from college. We never signed anything, just split jobs 50/50 on a handshake. After about 9 months I realized he was pocketing cash jobs on the side and not reporting them to our split. Total loss was around $4,300 before I caught on. What tipped me off was a client in Austin asking why I never invoiced them for the second mow. I checked my logs and he never logged it. Now I draft a simple one page agreement for anyone I work with, even for a weekend side gig. Has anyone else had a partnership blow up over verbal terms and how did you untangle the money part?
