Shoutout to paying $500 for a solid LLC formation service back in 2018
I started my freelance design thing around then and almost went with LegalZoom because of all the ads. But a friend who runs a small shop in Portland talked me into using a local business lawyer instead. That $500 got me a proper operating agreement and tax setup advice that saved my butt when I had to deal with an invoice dispute last year. Anyone else found that paying a bit more upfront for legal help beats the cheap online forms?

The cheap online forms work fine until something goes sideways. Then you realize you paid for a template that nobody can actually answer questions about. Local lawyers cost more but they pick up the phone when you have a problem. That invoice dispute would have cost me way more than $500 in lost money without the operating agreement. You really do get what you pay for with this stuff.

Saw a legal zoom horror story on X last week about this exact thing.

Wait, are you saying you actually had an invoice dispute and the operating agreement saved you more than $500? That's wild to hear because I always figured those templates were just boilerplate nobody ever looks at again. I guess having something on paper, even a cheap template, is better than flying blind when things actually get messy.
