Signed a bad lease last month and it cost me $800 to break it early
I signed a three-year lease for a retail space in Denver back in January without reading the fine print. There was a clause about early termination fees that I missed, and when my sales dropped 40% in April I had to get out. I paid $800 to break the lease because I didn't check the cancellation terms first. Anybody else get burned by a lease contract they didn't read through?

Watch for hidden renewal clauses too. @uma_ellis those types of things can sneak up on you even if the lease seems straightforward at first. Next time ask the landlord to walk through every single line with you before you sign anything.

Funny you say that, but $800 sounds like a pretty fair deal. In my experience, most landlords could have come after you for the entire remaining rent, so you actually got off light. Maybe take it as a cheap lesson on always checking the fine print before signing.
