Switching to an LLC vs. staying a sole proprietor for my side business

I started doing freelance graphic design about 18 months ago, mostly for local shops in Austin. I was just a sole proprietor, but after I hit $12k in income last quarter, my accountant warned me about liability risks. I ended up forming an LLC, but now I'm dealing with more paperwork and a $300 annual fee from the state. Has anyone else made that switch and regretted it, or do you think it's worth the hassle?

Honestly I feel like the liability thing gets blown out of proportion for small side gigs. Unless you're messing up logos for a hospital or something, nobody's gonna sue you over a $300 flyer.

Wait, @dianahayes, didn't you read that one lawyer's blog about personal assets?
