Had to choose between a new drill chuck or 3 hours of my Saturday

My old chuck started slipping on a job last week, so I had to pick: drive 45 minutes to the supply house for a replacement or spend my Saturday swapping out worn jaws. I went with the new chuck, and it took 20 minutes to swap, but now I'm wondering if that old one could've limped through a few more cabinets. Anybody else gamble on repairs vs. replacements like that?

Oh man, I read somewhere that most guys say a slipping chuck is basically a ticking time bomb, you're better off just swapping it out. Sounds like you made the right call if it only took 20 minutes.

Just buy the new chuck, man. Slipping jaws will eat your whole weekend anyway.

Yeah I used to be all about fixing old chucks till I wasted a whole afternoon on one that slipped worse after I put it back together. That one bad experience made me realize it's never just a quick fix with those things, always something else hiding underneath. You just saved me from learning that lesson the hard way again, how many times have you had to do that swap?
