Had to pick between a hand plane and a router plane for a flush trimming job
I was trimming some walnut drawer fronts flush to the frames and couldn't decide. Went with the router plane because I figured I'd get less tearout. Worked great on the straight grain but that one figured piece still chipped a little. Anyone used a low angle block plane for this and had better luck?

Yeah "whisper thin passes" is the real key, no tool saves you from that.

Nah, I gotta disagree a bit. Router plane is the right call for flush trimming most times, a low angle block plane can grab and tear out on figured stuff way worse. Keep your blade real sharp and take whisper thin passes on the tricky grain, that's your best bet.
