Kitchen designer's "standard sizes" comment made me recheck my whole process

Last Tuesday I was installing a set of uppers in a remodel over in Oak Park and the homeowner mentioned their designer said all my cabinets should be "industry standard" 34.5 inch heights with no filler adjustments. I've been building custom boxes for 18 years and I know every job has its own quirks, but that comment stuck with me. It got me thinking about how many times I've trusted the tape measure instead of actually test fitting the carcass before final assembly. I lost a full afternoon that day shimming and scribing because the walls were out of square by half an inch, something the designer never accounted for. Has anyone else had to push back on a designer's cookie-cutter specs, or do you just build to their numbers and eat the extra labor?

Admit it, I've built more than one cabinet that was "perfect" on paper and then spent a whole afternoon fighting a wall that had other plans. Last month I had a run of lowers that were dead on the dot per the designer's numbers, but the floor had this lovely 3/8 inch dip right in the corner. I ended up cutting little shims while muttering about the "standard" universe they live in. It's like they measure the house in a perfect world where nothing ever settles or bows. I've learned to just do a quick dry fit on the first box before I commit to the whole run, saves me from turning into a human belt sander.
