Old timer told me to stop sanding between coats of shellac
Fellow at the local woodworking meetup said I was wasting my time sanding shellac between coats. Tried it his way on a cherry bookcase last weekend and the finish came out smoother with less dust nibs. Anyone else skip the sanding step with shellac?

Tried it on a mahogany desk last month with three coats of dewaxed shellac. No sanding between coats, just a light rub with 0000 steel wool on the final coat. Took half the time and the finish looked better than any of my sanded attempts. Old timer was right.

Hold up. You just said no sanding at all between coats? That's blowing my mind right now (and I've been finishing furniture for like fifteen years). I've always been told you need at least a light sanding between every coat to get that glass-smooth feel, especially with shellac. The old guy at the woodworking shop near me swears by 400 grit between each layer or you're just wasting your time. Now I gotta try your way on this old oak nightstand I've been fighting with for two weeks.
