That time a client tore up my $4,200 bid and wrote his own number on it
I was doing a kitchen remodel out in Maplewood last spring, and the homeowner watched me measure every cabinet door and drawer front. When I handed him the quote, he laughed, grabbed a pen, crossed out my price, and wrote $2,800 in the margin. He said, 'You're just building boxes, right?' I didn't know whether to walk out or explain the soft-close hinges, the plywood versus particleboard, and the fact I had to reframe three doorways. Has anyone else had a customer try to haggle on a custom build like it's a yard sale? How do you say no without losing the whole job?
The "you're just building boxes" line is kinda missing the point though, cabinets are only like half the work. Reframing doorways, plumbing for the sink, electrical for the lights, that's where the hours actually go. You're not just selling boxes, you're selling a finished kitchen that actually fits.
