A flooded crawlspace in Portland showed me why I always carry extra cable ties now

I was under a house last spring, the mud was up to my knees, and my main bundle kept snagging on everything. I used a whole pack of 50 ties just to keep things clean and off the ground. What's your go-to trick for keeping a run organized in a truly awful space?

Strap everything to the joists above the mud line.

Riley43's idea to strap to the joists sounds good until you're dealing with old, rotten wood. I've had joists crumble when I put any weight on them. Running everything along the bottom, secured tight with ties, can actually be safer in some of these older Portland houses. You avoid putting stress on the structure. Keeping the bundle low also means less chance of a sharp nail up above slicing into your cables.

Ugh, that mud situation is the worst. I mean, my trick is to use a long piece of conduit or even PVC pipe as a sort of sled. You can lay your whole bundle on it and just drag the whole thing through the muck without snagging. Then you zip tie the cables to it every foot or so. It keeps everything up off the ground and you only have to secure the pipe itself a few times. Saves a ton of ties and your back.
