Changed my mind about those gel-filled splice cases after a job in Seattle

I always thought the gel-filled splice cases were overpriced junk compared to heat shrink. Then last Tuesday I had to do an emergency repair in a flooded vault near Pike Place and the gel case sealed up dry in like 3 minutes. Heat shrink would have taken twice as long and probably failed with all that moisture. Has anyone else had better luck with gel cases in wet spots?

Made the switch myself last year after a flooded pedestal gave me the same rude awakening. Guess I owe those gel cases an apology, they earned their keep way faster than my bruised ego did.

Knew I wasn't the only one who learned that lesson the hard way, @wesley181. My pedestal took a direct hit from a broken pipe and I was mad until the gel case survived a drop the next week. Did it change your whole setup approach, or just how you pick cases now?

Yeah the flooded pedestal thing, did you ever try those silicone sleeve covers? I threw one on my backup drive after a leak and it's still kicking two years later. Also swapped to smaller pelican cases for most of my gear, not waterproof but at least they float. Saved my ass at the lake last summer.
