I finally switched from crimp connectors to compression fittings on my last 20 jobs

I used to be all about crimp connectors for coax because they're cheap and fast. But after a job in Omaha last month where I had three callbacks in one week from signal loss, I bought a pack of compression fittings and a good tool. Honestly, the install feels more solid, and the signal readings on my meter are way cleaner. Anyone else made the switch and noticed a difference in long-term reliability?

...and once you go compression you never go back, I swear. I had the exact same issue with crimp connectors on longer runs where signal would just fall off a cliff for no reason. Compression fittings give you that solid feel when you tighten them down, and the dielectric stays put instead of getting compressed into the wrong shape. I started testing each connection with my meter after install, and compression stuff always comes back with way lower return loss readings. One thing I found helpful is to always wipe the cable end with isopropyl before fitting it, keeps any grime from messing with the connection. Also, don't cheap out on the tool get one of the ratcheting ones, makes the install way more consistent.

Read somewhere that compression fittings actually maintain better dielectric spacing compared to crimp types, which explains why the signal stays cleaner. Saw a study where they tested both after salt spray and UV exposure, the compression connections held up way longer before any degradation showed up. Makes sense why so many field techs have been switching over lately.

Once you go compression you never go back" - yeah I felt that in my soul lmao. My first few attempts with compression were a disaster though, I was cranking the tool so hard I was worried I'd snap the connector right off. Turns out you don't need to Hulk smash it, just a nice firm squeeze does the trick. Now I'm almost embarrassed about how many callbacks I used to eat with crimp connectors, like I was basically praying every time I finished a job.
