My old trainer told me to carry a signal meter on every single truck roll, and I blew him off for 2 years
When I first got into installing, this older guy named Dale who trained me kept saying the same thing over and over: never trust your eyes, trust the meter. I thought it was a waste of time since most jobs were simple hookups and the TV either worked or it didn't. Fast forward to a job in Mesa last Tuesday, customer swears up and down her internet drops every night around 8pm but everything looks fine when I get there at 2pm. I almost signed off on it, but I grabbed the meter out of habit and watched the downstream SNR tank from 38 to 29 right as I was packing up. Turned out to be a loose fitting on the tap that only acted up when the temp dropped. If I had just gone by the picture on the screen, I would have been back at that house in a week and looked like an idiot. Dale retired 3 years ago and I still hear his voice every time I want to skip that step. Any of you got a trainer quote that stuck with you way longer than you expected?
