Old apartment complex made me feel ancient about this job
Ran a service call last Tuesday in a 1970s complex over in Arlington, and man, the wiring in that place was straight out of a museum. We were swapping a dead drop for a new tenant and I opened the panel to find original RG59 with those nasty metal crimp connectors, not even compression. The walls were so old that the drywall crumbled when I tried to fish the new line, had to use a mule tape and about 40 minutes just to get a clean pull from the basement. It got me thinking how we used to do whole installs with just a razor knife and a screwdriver, no toner, no prep tools, you just trusted the wire. Now I got three different kinds of compression tools and a signal meter that costs more than my first truck. Young guys complain about tight attics, but they never had to re-crimp a fitting behind a fridge in the dark with a flashlight in their teeth. Has anyone else hit a building that made you feel like you're working in a time capsule, or am I just getting old?
