Rant: spent $340 on a fusion splicer for one fiber job, and now I can't decide if it was smart or stupid
Bought a used Sumitomo splicer off a guy in Bakersfield for $340 because I had one fiber run coming up and the shop's old unit kept throwing errors on me. Job went smooth, lost maybe two splices all day instead of the usual eight, and the customer even tipped me twenty bucks. But now it sits in my truck taking up space and I've only touched it twice since. Half of me says it paid for itself on stress alone, the other half says I could've rented one for $75 and kept the cash. Any of you buy your own gear instead of using the company stuff, and did it actually work out or just collect dust?

Man, I read somewhere that bought gear pays for itself if you use it three times, so two more jobs and you're golden.
