Tried using a fish tape on a buried conduit last week

Tried using a fish tape on a buried conduit last week. Got about 12 feet in before the tape snapped and left me with a 50 dollar piece of steel stuck underground. Anyone else had a conduit turn into a permanent tomb for your tools?

The "permanent tomb for your tools" part got me thinking. You ever stop to consider that the tape might have snapped because of something other than just getting snagged? I've seen cases where people used steel fish tape in pvc conduits that had a sharp burr on a coupling. That burr acts like a knife edge on the tape over time. Your tape might have been fine going in but that edge slowly wore through it as you pushed. Take that with a grain of salt though. My experience is just one perspective.

Is it really that deep though? Burrs happen, tape breaks, move on.
