Had a Minolta X-700 with a stuck shutter in a humid basement shop

The mirror was locked up and the advance lever wouldn't budge. I ended up using a drop of lighter fluid on the governor mechanism after checking the capacitors, which got it moving again. Anyone have a better solvent for old, gummy grease on those?

Oh man, lighter fluid is the classic "I have no idea what I'm doing" move, I've been there lol. I've heard some people swear by naptha for that old grease, it's a bit gentler. Honestly though, if it worked, you're already doing better than me. Last time I tried to fix a sticky shutter I just made it worse.

Remembered my dad using WD-40 on everything... even squeaky doors.

Used to think lighter fluid was a last resort hack for people who didn't know any better. Then I watched an old repair guy use Ronsonol on a stuck film advance and it worked perfectly. Changed my whole view, sometimes the simple stuff just works. For really old grease, pure naptha is probably the better call long term, but you can't argue with results.
