You said your homemade light seal foam is crumbling. That really sucks, especially after putting in the work. What type of foam did you go with when you made it? I ask because some foams just aren't cut out for long-term use, they dry out and fall apart. Did you use any kind of coating or sealant on it? I've seen that happen where the foam degrades faster if it's not protected from air or moisture. It might help to know what went wrong so the next one holds up better.

Hey, what about where you had it stored? Sunlight through a window can wreck foam faster than anything, even if it's not direct. I ruined some craft foam that way, just sitting on a shelf near a curtain. If it got any daily light, that might be why it dried out and crumbled. Try keeping the next one in a dark spot or use foam labeled for outdoor use, it handles light better. Also, heat from electronics nearby could speed things up without you noticing.

Oh man, did you use the same craft foam they make those cheap pool noodles from? Because that stuff turns to dust if you look at it wrong. @christopher943 is right, some foam just isn't built to last. Maybe you stored it next to a heater or something? Sounds like a total bummer after all that cutting and gluing.
