My first CLA on a Pentax K1000 took almost 5 hours

Picked up a beat up K1000 from a thrift store for $20. Figured it'd be good practice. What should have been a 2 hour job turned into an afternoon nightmare. The foam was basically tar, the mirror bumper had turned to goo, and someone had clearly tried to fix the shutter before me and left the curtain tension all messed up. Took me forever to get it back to spec. Actually learned a bunch about how the Copal shutter works though. Anyone else ever clean a camera that was way more jacked up than it looked?

Man that sounds like a brutal first go at it, I feel your pain. Getting past someone else's hack job is always the worst part, especially when they mess with shutter tension. At least you got a crash course on Copal shutters, those things are pretty solid when they're set right.

Wait, you actually had to fix someone else's shutter tension mess? That's like the absolute worst starting point for learning these things. Copal shutters are definitely workhorses once you get them dialed in, but they're so finicky with tension that even a tiny twist too far can throw everything off. I've seen folks give up on a perfectly good shutter just because they couldn't undo the previous owner's "improvements.

Is it really worth spending all day on a $20 camera though, @parker183?
