Warning: watch out for that old shutter cloth degrading from the inside

I was going through a 1940s Agfa folder last week and found the shutter curtains looked perfect on top but were completely crumbling where they fold, found out from a retired repair guy that the rubber lining turns to powder after about 60 years no matter how they look, has anyone else run into this hidden damage on old cloth shutters?

Is it really that common though? Feels like one of those "every camera is a ticking time bomb" stories that gets blown way out of proportion.

Funny you say that, @the_elizabeth, but I had a buddy whose old Canon just bricked last month for no reason at all. He'd barely used it and it sat in a drawer for years, then one day it just stopped turning on.

Was it the specific model or just bad luck? I'm curious if that's a known issue with certain Canon models or more of a one-off thing.
