A buddy at a campsite in Yosemite told me my tent stakes were wrong after I spent 20 minutes struggling with rocky ground
He handed me a set of 8-inch spiral stakes and said try these instead, and now I never leave home without them because they hold even in that hard packed dirt near the river, has anyone else switched to a different stake type for tough terrain?

Man, those spiral stakes are great until you hit a spot with buried roots! I had a trip up near Shasta last spring and spent a good ten minutes trying to twist one in before I realized I was just grinding against a thick root under the dirt. Had to move the whole tent over three feet to get a clean spot.

Oh man, I read somewhere that the ground in Yosemite is basically packed down by years of campers and deer, so those spiral stakes are a lifesaver! I switched to the same kind after a buddy at a site near Tahoe showed me how they twist in like a screw.
