A retired ranger in Glacier told me my sleeping pad was trash

I was setting up at Many Glacier last September and this old guy walked over, pointed at my foam pad, and said 'you'll feel every rock by 3am.' I laughed it off, but sure enough I woke up sore and cold on that granite site. Has anyone else gotten gear advice from strangers at trailheads that actually turned out to be right?

Foam pads are light and bulletproof, so that old guy was just gatekeeping comfort.
