Cleaned out my gear shed and found my first sleeping bag from 1998.

I unrolled it and saw the price tag still on it, $29.99 from a Kmart in Spokane. That bag got me through a dozen trips before I even knew what a temperature rating was. What's the oldest piece of gear you still have kicking around?

You ever check the actual safety specs on that old stuff? My buddy had a carabiner from the 90s that looked fine, but the metal was way more brittle than anything made today. It's not just about wear, the tech itself got better.

Honestly, that's just hoarding. Gear that old is probably unsafe and definitely not up to modern standards. Time to let it go.

Right? I totally get what @the_thea is saying! I held onto my old climbing rope for years because it had "sentimental value," but honestly, that's just dangerous. Modern gear is so much better and safer. I finally cut mine up and used it for a doormat, which felt way better than letting it rot in a bin.
