Found a way to keep my sleeping bag dry in the rain without a footprint. I put a heavy duty trash bag under my tent floor in Oregon last weekend.

Glad that worked for you, but careful with that setup... putting a plastic bag under the tent floor can actually trap water and make things wetter. The rain runs off the fly, hits the ground, and gets stuck under the plastic instead of soaking in. A footprint is cut to size to avoid that. Maybe try a cheap piece of Tyvek instead, it lets water through.

Ever notice how a lot of life hacks are like that plastic bag trick? They seem smart at first but end up causing a bigger problem, like @the_joseph pointed out. I've done similar things trying to fix a leaky faucet or patch a wall, only to make a bigger mess. It's that quick fix that doesn't really think about how things work together.

Remember my buddy who used a tarp under his whole tent? He woke up floating on a puddle he made himself. It's exactly that kind of fix where you don't see the water coming from the sides.
