Hot take: the REI guy talked me out of a $300 sleeping bag and I'm glad he did
Went to the REI in Denver last month ready to drop $300 on a 15 degree down bag for some late spring trips in the Rockies. The guy working the floor asked me three questions about where and when I actually camp, then pointed me toward a $120 synthetic bag instead. I was pretty skeptical but he explained that for 3 season stuff in Colorado, where it gets wet and I'm not doing anything extreme, the synthetic would keep me warmer if it got damp and I wouldn't cry if it got muddy. Used it twice now at around 8,000 feet and stayed toasty both nights, even when it dropped to about 28. Honestly saved me $180 that I put toward a better pad. Has anyone else had a gear shop employee actually steer them cheaper and been right about it?
