I thought the $8 foam pad from Walmart was junk until I slept 4 nights on it in Moab
Last spring I was packing for a 4 night trip in Moab and my old inflatable pad got a leak the night before we left. I grabbed a $8 blue foam pad from the Walmart in Grand Junction as a backup and honestly expected to be miserable. Slept better on that thing than my $80 pad, mostly because I never had to worry about it popping on a rock or waking up on the ground at 3am. Anyone else find cheap gear that just works better for them?
Slept better because you never had to worry about it popping, sure, but that is the foam doing one job and doing it well. Where it falls apart for me is anything wet or cold. That blue pad has an R value around 1.4, so on a 35 degree night in Moab you are losing heat straight into the ground, and closed cell foam does not compress, so it eats a ton of pack space for the weight. I still throw one in the truck as a sit pad or a backup, but the fact that it survived four nights does not mean it sleeps better than a good inflatable. It just means it cannot fail, which is a different thing.
