Just learned how much a sleeping bag's fill power rating actually matters

I was reading a review on OutdoorGearLab about a 20-degree bag, and they said a 650-fill down bag weighs almost a pound more than an 800-fill one for the same warmth. I always thought fill power was just marketing. Now I get why my old, heavy bag was such a pain to pack. Has anyone else switched to a higher fill power bag and noticed a real difference on the trail?

That weight difference is a game changer for your knees on long hikes. My old 650-fill bag felt like carrying a brick after a few miles. Switched to 800-fill and my pack just feels lighter all day.

Totally get what you mean about that brick feeling. I dragged an old heavy sleeping bag up a trail last year and my legs were screaming by mile five. Upgraded to a higher fill power before my last trip and it was a whole different story, like I could actually enjoy the hike instead of just surviving it. Makes you realize how much those little ounces add up over a full day of walking.

Carrying dead weight like that just kills the fun. My first backpacking trip was with a cheap synthetic bag, and every uphill felt like a punishment. Swapping it out for lighter gear changed everything for me too. It's not just about the pack weight, it's about your whole mood on the trail. You stop fighting your stuff and finally start seeing the scenery.
